Services to honor Ms. Gaines and information for Seadrift families
Posted on 11/23/2018

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Ms. Michelle Gaines, Pre-Kindergarten teacher at Seadrift School.

Ms. Gaines was a wonderful teacher who was loved by her family, her community and her school family.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 24 at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home in Port Lavaca from 5 – 7 p.m. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, November 25 at 2 p.m. at the Seadrift cemetery.

Seadrift School families are encouraged to talk with their children. It is important that our students know they are loved and supported as they talk about their feelings. Adult family members serve as important models for helping children handle tragedies like this.

Please consider the following when talking with children:

  • Allow for your child to talk about his/her feelings. If this is the first loss your child has experienced, your child may not know how to respond and will be looking for your guidance.
  • Children may express their loss in different ways. Be patient and understanding of their emotions.
  • Encourage your child to express their emotions in such forms as notes, letters, and pictures.
  • Reaffirm that your child’s reaction is normal and be understanding of their feelings.
  • Watch for signs of concern such as aggression, withdrawal, etc.

Seadrift School administration and counselor will visit with students when school resumes on Monday. The students will read, The Goodbye Book, by Todd Parr, and children will be invited to participate in an activity remembering their teacher. Mrs. Chatham and Mrs. Mendez will continue to work with both our morning Pre-K and afternoon Kindergarten groups.

A team of School Counselors and Licensed Specialist in School Psychology will be located in the Seadrift Library throughout the day on Monday to provide emotional support of our students. Parents with special counseling concerns or those would like additional support for their child in regards to this loss, please call us at 361-785-5720.

Our deepest sympathies are extended to the Gaines family and friends. We appreciate the support from our community as we work together to support our students through this difficult time.
